ABOUT MYOKO
Myoko Kogen β Japan’s hidden mountain gem
Myoko Kogen is a mountain resort area nestled in Niigata Prefecture, Japan. Renowned for world-class snowfall and legendary light powder snow, it is one of Japan’s premier destinations for skiing and snowboarding. From summer through autumn, explore stunning hiking trails, crystal-clear alpine lakes, and rejuvenating natural hot springs.
Why Visit Myoko Kogen?
Tucked into the mountains of Niigata Prefecture, Myoko Kogen is one of Japan’s best-kept travel secrets. The region receives some of the heaviest snowfall in the world β regularly exceeding 10 metres per season β making it a paradise for skiers and snowboarders seeking deep, untracked powder. Yet the appeal of Myoko extends far beyond winter sports.
In summer, the mountains transform into a lush hiking destination. Trails lead through beech forests and alpine meadows to the summit of Mount Myoko (2,454 m), an ancient volcano that dominates the skyline. Wildflowers carpet the hillsides from June through August, and the cool mountain air offers welcome relief from the heat of Japan’s lowland cities.
Hot Springs (Onsen)
Myoko Kogen is blessed with a rich network of natural hot springs. The area encompasses several distinct onsen villages, each with its own character β from the lively aprΓ¨s-ski atmosphere of Akakura Onsen to the quieter, more traditional feel of Sekiyama and Tsubame Onsen. After a day on the slopes or the trails, soaking in the mineral-rich waters beneath the stars is an unforgettable experience.
Culture & History
The region has a deep spiritual heritage centred on Sekiyama Shrine (ι’ε±±η₯η€Ύ), a Shinto sanctuary founded over 1,300 years ago at the foot of Mount Myoko. The shrine is the venue for the dramatic Hi-matsuri (Fire Festival) held each July, when torch-lit processions wind through the cedar trees in a ceremony that has continued for centuries. Nearby, the town of Myoko also offers excellent local cuisine β fresh soba, hearty ramen, and seasonal mountain vegetables feature prominently on menus throughout the area.
πΏ Guided Backcountry Tours
